We chose the grayline tour…were too scared to drive on icy roads in winter ! The sites looks so different in summers and so different in winters! I think we will need to go back in summers to witness the country’s beauty!

I don’t know where you live but the flight and hotel were really cheap. We got our flight out of Boston to Reykjavik and an apartment suite with kitchen so we could cook our own meals for $675. The food, excursions and rental cars is where the money adds up!

Thanks so much Kevin – I hope you have a great time in Iceland! We absolutely loved our time there and can’t wait to return. As for driving in Iceland we had no issues (except for getting petrol). The roads were fine, we had a Toyota Corolla and it was sufficient – we didn’t do any off road driving either. We picked up our car at the airport and then dropped it off a few days later in Reykjavik.

After picking up our car we looked for a gas station but the only ones we could find were pay at the pump and wouldn’t accept our credit cards. Eventually we found a station with attendants and were able to pay inside – we were told this is often a problem for travelers. The gas stations also offer prepaid cards that you can buy and then use at non-serviced stations. Just a heads up if you encounter the same problems 🙂

Great post! My wife and I are traveling to Iceland at the beginning of September. I noticed that you rented a compact car. How did you find the driving? We aren’t planning on doing any off-roading. We are renting a Hyundai I30.

We did the same Golden Circle route with a rental in October 2012. We were lucky that the sky was a gorgeous blue throughout, and loved every minute of it. Great photos! Good luck and safe travels!

We loved the Skyr yogurt! Even better, we had cheesecake made with it in Reykjavik that was delicious! The yogurt is like thick Greek yogurt but very silky and the flavours are different – almost a bit sour. Luckily it was so cold in our rental car at night we were able to stock up and it never went bad 🙂
